A beaded liner locks into a track around the top of the wall. When it starts popping out in one place, the cause is usually the track, the water level or chemistry, and it gets worse quickly once water gets behind the bead.
What you will see
The liner edge lifts out of the receiver along a section of wall, sometimes with water visibly behind it. On an overlap liner the equivalent failure is the coping strip letting go, and the liner sags at the waterline. Both let pool water behind the liner, which is where the real damage starts.
The three usual causes
- The receiver is worn or full of old sealant, so the bead cannot lock. Common on a pool getting its second or third liner.
- Water level and chemistry: running the pool low, or allowing the liner to soften, reduces the tension that holds the bead in place.
- Installation: a liner that was not fully seated, or that was cut slightly short, pulls back at the waterline.

Re-seating a section of liner is a spot repair: published figures for spot work run $150 to $600. If the bead receiver is brittle, damaged or contaminated, it is replaced as part of the liner job, which is the more reliable fix.
